Same Language Subtitles double literacy rates

25% of India’s 1.2 Billion population is classified as illiterate, or approximately 300 million people. Karaoke music on television, known asĀ Same Language Subtitles, has been used extensively in India as a low cost way of addressing this challenge.

Numerous research reports have shown that this approach doubles literacy rates among Indian school children. The chart below illustrates how switching to Same Language Subtitles significantly focuses attention to the movement of the subtitles over static subtitles.

It also illustrates why native speakers find Same Language Subtitles distracting, as there attention is diverted to the subtitles, even though it is not necessary for comprehension.
